PMP Exam Day
Know what to expect. The exam is 180 questions in 240 minutes. Here is everything about format, breaks, and strategy.
Exam Structure
Time math:
Question Types (2026)
Multiple Choice (Single Answer)
~~50%Standard 4-option questions. Select one correct answer.
💡 Read all 4 options before selecting. Eliminate clearly wrong answers first.
Multiple Response (Multiple Correct)
~~20%Select 2 or 3 correct answers from a list. Partial credit is NOT given — all must be correct.
💡 The question will state 'Select TWO' or 'Select ALL that apply.' Budget extra time for these.
Matching
~~10%Match items in one column to items in another column.
💡 Start with the items you know with certainty and work from there.
Hotspot
~~5%Click on an area of a diagram, chart, or image.
💡 Usually tests whether you can identify a specific area on a process diagram or chart.
Drag and Drop
~~5%Arrange items in the correct order or match them to categories by dragging.
💡 Common for process sequence questions (what comes before/after).
Case/Scenario Based (2026 New)
~~10%A longer scenario followed by 2-3 questions about the same situation. Tests deeper analysis.
💡 Read the scenario carefully. Questions in a set may build on each other.
Test-Taking Strategy
Always think like PMI, not like your job
PMI has a preferred way of doing things. Their PM is collaborative, process-following, and communication-heavy. If your job experience conflicts with PMI's approach, go with PMI.
Flag and move — don't get stuck
If you're uncertain, flag the question and move on. Come back at the end. The exam allows you to review flagged questions. Spending 5 minutes on one question hurts your time budget.
Eliminate obviously wrong answers first
On a 4-option question with an uncertain answer, eliminating 2 wrong options gives you a 50-50 shot. Elimination is faster than analysis for hard questions.
Watch for PMI keywords
Questions asking 'what should the PM do FIRST' or 'BEST action' often have multiple correct answers — only one is most correct. The context usually reveals which.
Take both breaks
Even if you feel fine. Standing, stretching, and stepping away for 10 minutes maintains focus for the final section. Cognitive fatigue is real at hour 3.
Budget time in thirds
60 questions before each break. If you're at question 60 and have spent 90+ minutes, you need to speed up. 60 questions in 80 minutes is the sustainable pace.
